Complete Puppy Feeding Guide for India: What, How Much & How Often
By Petzify Pet Care Team · · 6 min read
From 8 weeks to 12 months — a practical feeding schedule, portion guide and food checklist every new puppy parent in India needs.
How often should you feed a puppy?
A puppy's stomach is small but its energy needs are huge, so meals must be split through the day. From 8 to 12 weeks of age, feed 4 small meals a day. From 3 to 6 months, move to 3 meals a day. After 6 months, most breeds do well on 2 meals a day, which is also the schedule most adult dogs stay on for life.
Consistency matters more than perfection — feed at the same times daily, and always keep fresh water available, especially in Indian summers.
How much food does a puppy need?
Portion size depends on breed size, age and the calorie density of the food. The feeding chart printed on your puppy food pack is the right starting point — weigh your puppy every 2 weeks and adjust. You should be able to feel (not see) the ribs; a visible waistline when viewed from above means the portion is right.
- Small breeds (Shih Tzu, Pomeranian): roughly 150–250 g/day split across meals
- Medium breeds (Beagle, Indian Spitz): roughly 250–400 g/day
- Large breeds (Labrador, Golden Retriever, GSD): roughly 400–600 g/day, using a large-breed puppy formula to protect joints
Foods to avoid completely
Never feed chocolate, grapes or raisins, onion, garlic, cooked bones, excessive milk (most puppies are lactose intolerant), or anything with xylitol. Salty, spicy table scraps cause more vet visits in India than almost anything else.
When should you switch to adult food?
Small breeds mature early — switch at 9–10 months. Medium breeds at about 12 months, and large breeds at 12–15 months. Transition gradually over 7 days by mixing increasing amounts of the new food into the old to avoid an upset stomach.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I feed my puppy home-cooked food?
Yes, but it must be balanced — plain rice and curd alone lacks protein, calcium and essential fatty acids a growing puppy needs. A vet-designed diet plan combining home food with a quality puppy kibble is the safest approach.
Which is the best puppy food in India?
The best food depends on your puppy's breed size, age and any sensitivities. Look for a named meat source as the first ingredient and an AAFCO/FEDIAF growth formulation. Petzify stocks vet-recommended puppy foods for every budget.
